Music with Video Conferencing Services like Zoom and Skype etc.
Recommendations for music worship with video conferences services like zoom and multi-location live music production (where we may be headed for a while):
The audio compression algorithm used for zoom and video conferencing is a vocoder (voice). It is optimized for the characteristics of the human voice, low delay and bandwidth efficiency. Cellular and IP phones use the similar algorithms. Because the spectrum is divided up (sub band encoding), quality music compression is poor unless some guidelines are followed. The algorithm cannot authentically process music when notes are close in pitch like chords.
Possible remedies for vocoder style compression:
Churches may actually find this simplicity in worship accompaniment refreshing. (Eph 5:19)
Alternatively video conference with prayer/preaching/scripture etc leadership can be added to one way streaming video production along with fully instrumented worship at full quality levels. Multiple musicians can relay a song hopping to each other in multiple locations to build a group of instruments and vocals. This is tricky with timing and logistics, as each additional group is independent and delayed about 30 seconds. This process has been successfully tested, for music production. But not for live streaming.
Remote music production is easy inexpensive with as most churches have good audio production capability. This may become necessary to preserve the health and safety of worship leaders. Please post comments and experiences with the link below.

Possible remedies for vocoder style compression:
- Acapella single voice (two part harmony may be tried) may be best for participating individuals and families as it would likely encourage participation (Eph 5:19)
- One stop Pipe organ with one note melody and (one note bass may be tested)
- Recorder or Flute should work well
- Limited percussion may work well as it mimics vocal consonants
- The piano is problematic because each note is typically composed of multiple strings confusing the algorithm and producing phase modulation like distortion that is distracting and disturbing to the ear.
- Strings and guitar may be OK
- Brass and reeded instruments may be too spectrally complex
- It is likely that more than one note melody or multiple instruments are too much information (no chords, think of Schroder playing for Lucy in A Charlie Brown Christmas)
- Test!
